Long Fingernail Folks Don't Like iPod Touch or IPhone

The LA Times reported that women with long fingernails don't like the touch screen on the iPod Touch and iPhone (same screen technology). The problem is the iPhone's touch screen responds to the electrical charge emitted by fingertips (as in the skin on one's fingertips). Apparently long-fingernail folks have trouble getting their skin to actually touch the screen.

One user went so far as to describe the iPhone's inability to be used by folks with long fingernails as misogyny (hatred of women). Ha ha.... oh, the poor long-fingernail folks.

As for me, this iPod Touch Gadget Girl has never been able to stand the feeling of long-fingernails. When I touch-type, I want to TOUCH the keyboard, as in feel it under my fingers and so I am more than satisfied with the iPod Touch's screen and how it responds.

The Apple iPod Shuffle Feature

So I have a new iPod Touch (hence the start of the blog). It was a birthday gift and well, let's just say, I'm not a 20-something, nor.... well, I'm not the iPod-generation. So I'm still learning my way around my iPod Touch, but here is one feature, that I believe is on all iPod's: Shuffle. Basically you have your list of songs and you touch (iPod Touch is operated by touch) the word Shuffle and voila the songs will be played in a brand new order.

I think you have to be more than 30-years-old to truly appreciate how cool this is. I mean first we had where you only could get a whole album. And those of us that loved two songs on this album and 3 on another, had to be really dedicated and make cassette tapes of just those songs we loved. Many of us did that. And when you put that cassette in the player and listened to it for the first time, you always felt like you had created the greatest music blend known to mankind. But the funny thing is, after you played that cassette a dozen or two times, the arrangement didn't seem nearly so cool. In fact you found you didn't really like it that much better than just playing the album.

Listening to music is nicest when there is something fresh about the experience. And the iPod Shuffle feature offers just that. Actually iTunes has the same feature. I mean it's a small thing, right? But it's a big deal in terms of how much more fun it is to listen to your collection of songs when you don't know what's coming up next.

Well I like it. It's just one of many reasons that Apple really is a cool company.

Free Texting to and from cell phone and the iPod Touch

How about sending FREE text messages from an Apple iPod Touch to another iPod Touch or to any cell phone? From any cell phone to any other cell phone?

Here is how it works:

Now anybody can use a web browser, a cell phone or an Apple iPod Touch to send text messages for free, by signing up with MogoTXT.com. In order to prevent SPAM, friends must also be registered. MogoTXT is advertiser-supported. Users write and send a text message. MogoTXT attaches a short ad at the bottom of each message. MogoTXT also asks users to view a very small number of other ads each month via text message. The advertisers pay for the messages and there is no membership fee.

MogoTXT has created a messaging console and other features to users manage their mobile lifestyle:
MogoTXT has built a messaging console that anybody can use to communicate with up to five different groups simultaneously. The Messaging Console also allows people to manage their mobile lifestyle by enabling people to invite and add new contacts, block undesired contacts, and to direct incoming messages to a computer or to a mobile device. MogoTXT has also created other features that enable users to join or drop out of text message groups while on the go.

MogoTXT unlocks the iPod Touch for texting:
For the first time ever, users of an Apple iPod Touch can send one-to-one or group text messages to other Apple iPod Touch users or to cell phone users. Users don't need to have a cell phone account or a cell phone number to send text messages using MogoTXT since the user will not pay for the messages. In the near future, MogoTXT's users will be able to send text messages using any networked or WiFi-enabled device - such as the Nintendo DS, Sony PSP, Nintendo Wii and other video game consoles.

Works on all major networks:
MogoTXT can deliver text messages to subscribers of all major cell phone carriers in the United States, such as Alltel, AT&T, Cellular One, Nextel, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon. Please note, however, that Verizon is not currently allowing its subscribers to participate in MogoTXT's group text messaging service. MogoTXT hopes to soon be able to offer group text messaging service to Verizon's subscribers.

This is a really interesting first, in my opinion. It suggests a brand-new model for paying for text messaging services -- namely the advertiser pays instead of the consumer. I have to believe this could be the answer to some teen/parent battles about overly high text message bills.

Pretty cool stuff, huh? Interesting that the iPod Touch has a big enough market share that MogoTXT is including it in the offering from Day 1.

DLO Hip Case for iPod Touch

The black DLO HipCase Leather Folio for iPod Touch is one of the hottest-selling iPod Touch cases for two, make that three, simple reasons.

  1. It's close to being a wallet that will hold your iPod Touch. Its hidden pocket is perfect for credit cards, IDs, or cash. I hope it is the first of many wallet-like iPod Touch cases and that they continue to grow to hold more than just a card or two. Who wouldn't want everything they have in their current wallet, plus their iPod Touch?

  2. They are leather and look appropriate even in a business setting.

  3. It comes with a belt clip, for those of us that want to do something else with our hands.

This is the best case that I've seen for the iPod Touch so far, though I hope to see more comprehensive ones added. And the best price that I'm aware of (Please let me know if you see a better one!) is at Amazon.
